Summer marks for most the beginning of a pleasant period where it is marked by the change of weather, the prospect of escape and vacation. During the summer months, a person’s mood improves, stress levels decline and people are more open to their social contacts and of course to their sex life.
Indeed, the frequency of sexual intercourse increases greatly during the summer months, as confirmed by modern research.
The expectation for the renewal of the sexual life prevails, for more sexual contacts while there is clearly the mood for more “risk” in the sexual life.
People tend to express their desire for sex more openly, engage more often in sexual “adventures” and are more exposed to social situations that favor flirting and seeking sexual partners.
Summer also sees more traffic to porn sites and dating apps than ever before. This is evidenced by an analysis of Google searches for pornography published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior.
And it has nothing to do with the fact that people in general are more relaxed in the summer and spend more time online. In other words, there is no corresponding increase in traffic to Facebook.
Starting from the role of biology, in summer the days are longer and we are exposed to more hours in the sun, which in turn increases the production of serotonin. It is the brain chemical that makes us feel good, which is why most antidepressants are designed to boost it. With elevated serotonin most people are in a better mood and are open to new things and new acquaintances.
Apart from the effect of serotonin on psychology, its role is played by the chapter “holidays”, which in turn helps the situation. The excitement we usually feel for them enhances our normal arousal, which often turns into sexual arousal. Psychologists call it the theory of metaphor of enthusiasm. To understand how it works, consider that in a 2003 experiment, a group of people who had just gotten off a crazy roller coaster race found the people in the photo much more attractive than those still waiting in line. In short, the explanation from the psychological point of view is that we partly transfer our enthusiasm from outdoor activities to the bedroom.
There is of course the time factor. We all have more free time in the summer, from teenagers and students to adult workers waiting for their leave to relax from the daily grind and stress. Without stress it makes perfect sense to have more desire for sex.
These changes in sexual life come as a result of the overall positive change in the individual’s mood. Significant reduction in stress is one of the most important reasons for having sex during the summer season. The circumstances of the holidays, the temporary reduction of the workload but also the physical and psychological rest discharge people psycho-emotionally and allow them to function better.
